Depends what you want to make, I guess. I pretty much only make maps, flags, coat of arms etc. and for that GIMP is pretty great. Inkscape is what you want for max crispness, however. Never figured out how to use that properly though.
I'll be making maps and heraldry, but I also want something to sketch with. I'll check out Inkscape, though.
