I agree, how do they feed? Also, how do they breathe? If it's liquid and not air what keeps them alive?
I think it's more of a cryogenic kind of process. The ponies are stuck in there while the liquid around them feeds the nutrients they need to not wither away within a few weeks. Either that or the liquid eventually turns them into changelings and they're released once all their love has been drained out. Who knows?
