nice

yeah ive tried 3d mapping, but getting the textures to look good is a pain.
i have a 10800x5400px map, but for low earth orbit space renders it isnt high enough, and everyone i ask seems to use 2d images.
any advice?

I used 8k textures in this one, I made normal map in photoshop to get a little 3d look to it. I also made sphere and add Earth cloud texture there with alpha map. Then I used one sphere for the city lights and I rendered couple of different renders pass with v-ray. Then I just composite all in After Effects. I found the right settings when I made a lot of tests and tweeking. This works for me but it could be a very hard if you render it very close. You could also use a displasement map to tesselate the Earth surface.

yeah, ive actually been thinking that i should get screen shots of google earth, photoshop out errors, and stitch together lots of images of the areas i want
it will be really time consuming and annoying though

I´s hard job but you can get pretty good results by that. I used very high quality photos and my pc almost run out of memory even with 16gb of memory :)

wow yeah ive only got 12
i suppose i could create a mix of textures so that its only hires in some areas

i'd probably never finish the job though lol

Try to take a break for that and do something else for a while and the go back to it. This works for me pretty good. I have a lot of projects right now that is almost finish but needs something to be perfect.
