Oh god the Abramprise. Shit, that thing actually cracked when they were in the event horizon of the black hole. Who the fuck designed these things?!
Who cares? Maybe the designers though that it was a better dsign that having the screen completely black out (like a standard HUD for fighter jets or the syetem for this jet's [admittedly controversial] helmet-mounted display system. It makes it better to be able to see tactical info on the main screen without having it be completely blacked out during a call from another ship or a planet, as shown here.
