well, it really depends on you, you need to be fast enough to put it in action.
the ideal thing to do is to run away anytime you can instead of fighting, but the thing is
you have control over them if you take them off guard and you can you their own strenght against them.
sometimes the best thign to do is to grab a certain part of the body to keep them from reaching you or to touch
a sensitive spot that keep them under control.
sometimes the best thing is to cup them just to stop and redirect the punch with their own strenght.

pa-kua (or bagua) is a defensive martial art that uses circular motion as a base. it's about avoiding and defending yourself with fast, light strikes.
Hmm... I see your point. My whole thing, though, is avoiding and striking in the same instance. I guess sweeps are useful, but I don't use them often.

:[]!!!!!!!! It is! It is! Gah! I'm learning that VIA Tai-Chi! Blaaaahhhhh...! I dunno if it's like this for you, but learning pakua via Tai-Chi is confusing sometimes. Every step and movement has a different name. I tend to make up my own when I can't remember. :x

well, that's right. I don't remember weird names either, but since all the moves are based on the same circular movement again and again, you can aply that to every move you want and make your own "combos". this was an exercise own sensei told us to do. Instead of remembering the specific moves, we had to think about the tai chi slow energy motion and create our own defensive move based on that.
I teaches you to think and feel instead of learning from memory and repeated actions, pretty useful when you think reality is not a set known situation.
Well, yeah, but I'm just saying when learning the forms. Sparring is a completely different animal and I don't ever think of the names of moves when I use 'em. I can remember the postures just fine, I'm actually one of the better students for that reason, I just like to make fun of the names.

There's this one called, "battle of the precious chicken". It's my favorite.

ROFL PRECIOUS CHICKEN.
Yerp. There's also a vicious tiger, an ape man who steals fruit, a snake entwining things, a black dragon, a maiden doing something with a book, a rhino, a white snake (I think), and others I can't recall.
There are other forms, too that have weird names. The one I'm learning now has a move called "carry the baby" right in the middle of it.

I feel like that dude from Warrior's Way when I do it. BD
