It's because in a 3D game, the camera can't focus the player were to look as much as a 2D game. Games with fixed camera angles always have an advantage at conveying a mood. In a 3D FPS, the player will run through a level leaving most of the art in the peripheral.

I know. It's also so sad to know how much work goes into creating a 3d game, and yet hard it is to really appreciate it.
