Yes, if you cut the nail too short, near the vein, you could hurt them and make them bleed a lot.

So, the safest zone to cut it's at #3. Between zone #3 and #2 you must be really careful not to cut the vein. If you don't feel confident enough, then you should take your birds to a vet.
I've got doves too, and I tried cutting their nails once. I cut a bit higher of what I should have, and my poor dove bled a lot. I felt really bad and never tried to do it myself again. My mom has natural talent for that, so I let her do the work.

You're welcome Well, since your canary has really long nails, the safe zone is much larger and less risky to cut, but the fear of hurting it it's understandable.

Another sad story: I had 3 ringnecks doves and two of them flew away through the window. I never saw them again. I still miss them... 
So I was left with the male (again) dove who is white ringneck (the ring is almost invisible) and I got him a girlfriend afterwards. They are together and happy now

I have around 30 ringneck doves I had a lot more!! around 60 but I sold some of them. Because it was hard to take care of them all
I also have 2 spotted doves! and now they have 2 babies they're also called turtle doves

Aww, baby doves are soo cute and they grow so fast! I only hope your turtle doves will be good and dedicated parents, otherwise you'll end up feeding and taking care of the babies. That happened to me with my first doves (they stopped feeding their baby after it grew a little) and it's nice to do the work but it's a bit time consuming too. Babies eat a lot!
