Yeah, I kinda figured, what with the Cutie Mark Chronicles showing AJ and Big Mac with Granny back then. But I still hold on hope that they had to go on some kind of... apple business trip? Ok, I'm in denial
(this is askunterhaching's main) Well, maybe, because Applebloom is so much younger, and in the cutie mark chronicles she probably isn't born yet and Big Macintosh and AJ live with Granny even then, they are alive and the siblings just like living in Ponyville. It could be a good guess that Big Mac showed a very good skill at applebucking at a young age and Granny needed help and AJ went along because 'i dun wanna be sep'rated from big macintosh' ....that or big mac(as seen in the episode) can't stand being without his sister.
That, or Applebloom isn't really their sister

I don't think her cutie mark is anything to so with apples. I mean you can obviously see shes good at fixing up the cutie mark crusaders club house. Though her hair color says she is. I mean you mix aj's and applebloom's hair color and you get big mac's..... it is my head canon you cannot take it away XD

Ok, please forgive me for crossing your head canon. As far as I can see, Applebloom is a repair/handy pony, so no problem there. I just find it hard to believe that the parents would have a kid, and then just give it to Granny to raise. Seems unparent-like
Mmmm Not really. What if applebloom was like 'I wanna be with applejack!' Also, my brother was given to my grandparents as a baby but my mom was really young... Or maybe its just how we fear D: also I think the flowers are just there to accent the smiles ouo... Okay now i'm just pulling it out of my ass XD
As far as I am concerned the question of whether AJ's parent are or are not still alive has pretty strong evidence on both sides.
On the one hand, AJ's parents being dead would explain some thing, like why Granny is raising them so young as well as giving a really good explanation of why AJ is so attache to that hat (remember that bit at the wedding where she did her "shifty eyes" to check if anyone was looking, and then put it on on top of her maid of honor coustume?) My theory used to be that AJ's parents gave her the hat, but now I am pretty conviced the hat might originally BE her dad's (Stetsons are unisex, and orange/tan is a fairly gender neutral color, so it could be a man's hat).
On the they are alive side, there is the question of Applebloom. But there is a bigger matter. Consider all of the OTHER ponies at Sweet Apple Acres (Apple Fritter, Red Delcious, Golden Delcious etc.)SAA is literally FILLED with ponies, and while quite a few look a bit older than AJ, NONE of them look old enough to be parents. The only two fully adult ponies Ive seen are Granny Smith and Apple Strudel. So where are all THIER parents? Appleoosa? I'm beginning to think there may have been a real tragedy in SAA's past, one big enough to wipe out a whole generation.

Like how I believe Luna looks the way she does in season 2 is because it's at night. I think she reverts to season 1 Luna during the day, because she is out of her element.
