The latest statement was that this might happen for 2015 or 2016, with a diesel-powered preview service maybe in december 2012. I remain doubtful; over the years, a lot has been promised, and all of it was delayed.

They did some work a little while ago on a part of track between Heerlen eh, HBF and "de kissel" at some places we just can't imagine that they would be able to create a double track there though

They are actually planning full double-tracking and electrification between Heerlen and Herzogenrath, but I'm not sure how far along they are.

[link] has an overview over the projects. I have a feeling that you might understand that site better than I do. :D

ok, so it says that in Station landgraaf, they are currently making (I think it's done?) a passage track, where one train can halt at the station, so another one can pass... THe fact that the last track between landgraaf and herzogenrath is what's stopping everything currently... It's the bottleneck... So apparently the dutch government has 20 million and the german government has 6.5 million. I guess 1 km could cost up to 250000 euro... I guess they have enough? The money is available, so I don't see why they aren't working on it yet?

The passage track was the first project; it might be done already (I haven't checked lately).

250,000 € per kilometer is actually a pretty good estimate. Railroads aren't cheap, especially electrified. I'm not entirely sure whether the money on the german side is already there or whether they are still thinking about it. But after the money, they still need to do all the planning, which isn't complete yet (at least on the german side).

I think that is finished now.. It said that the German government set the 6.5 million aside , so I assume it's generating interest on some bank account or something :) I gess the planning does take some time.. Part of the tracks are going through a residential area, I doubt if it will be so easy to make it double track...Some bridges need to be replaced, etc etc

Ah, okay. I can sort of get the general meaning of dutch texts, but it's difficult with the details (by the way, one thing I always wondered: How easy is it for dutch speakers to understand german?)

Yeah, I think bridges and so on are the main reason why the project is so expensive. In Germany, it's mostly the station of Herzogenrath that needs to be rebuilt.

well, when I grew up, we had like 8 channels on TV ;) 2 dutch, 2 from Belgium, and 4 German channels, so as we were little, he watched a LOT on German tv, just like everyone here did.. The local dialect also sounds almost like the Dialect from Cologne, so there are lots of Parallels.. But having an American wife, going to Pizza hut in Aachen ordering in German while thinking in Dutch sometimes gives me difficulties ;) Luckily they knows us there by now, she often they just talk English to her. I have to Say that I find Aachen as really wonderful city.. It's almost as diverse in Ethnic cultures as Amsterdam or Paris is!
