Well, I guess I have "issues" with the style then. I personally believe in drawing famous characters in a respective way, no matter what your style is. I would never sink so low I would actually blame on my style for messing up how a famous character looks.
Drawing a character and shrugging off your artistic methods for the sake of mirroring an image, especially when you're a cartoonist, betrays the world you are illustrating and removes the character from it. Superman especially is largely up for personal interpretation, as he carries himself as something more of a symbol than a simple person (everyone's view on strength and honor is different), and having an eight decade long track record can often ask for fresh perspectives on a long-lived character like him (heck, he's changed quite a bit since his '38 debut). I am very much a traditional Superman fan, so I can appreciate how much of Superman's character the artist was actually able to keep while still hanging onto his recognizable style.
This is just what I see and may not reflect the artist's opinion: unlike DC Comics, Cheeks' work isn't meant to portray personality. It literally personifies it. The nose was probably shortened so Supes' features are gathered into a strong focal point, emphasizing the character's size, and the beauty mark further pushes that idea (features are pushed up the face to supply the design with a broad chin, a characteristic canon Supes attests to). He appears quite boyish, which leads me to believe that it is a personality statement. Straightforward, collected, simple-minded. Huge arms taper down into modest-sized wrists and hands, as if emulating an equal amount of strength and tenderness. He still has that barrel chest of stability and power (hurricane breath, ahoy!). Large, arching legs give the figure energy and will look quite awesome in flight. Eyes are blue, hair is black, suit consists of primary colors. I actually find the likeness quite uncanny, in a manner of speaking. Haha.
So in conclusion, this is not how DC sees Supes, but how Cheeks sees him, and a cartoonist doesn't mirror reality. They make up their own. :] Sorry, I didn't mean for this to get so long.
