Head shape. Alligators have squarish/ round heads while crocodiles have angler/triangle-like head shapes. There's also the tails, but that difference is to a lesser degree. Oddly enough, that's where it looks more crocodile than gator due to the ridges Leatherhead has here. Well, that and how his teeth are arrange.
In fact, by these concept designs, Leatherhead looks more like the urban myth on gator/crocodile hybrids (which don't actually exist, but it's a common belief that's apparently popular among New Yorkers). It would explained how from an up angle, his head takes on an alligator appreance while from the side, his head designs look more crocodile.
