I undestand, man. Nowadays, I pretty much focus on artwork involving my original characters and/or characters created by my friends that I like to draw. 
The more characters you are able to draw (OCs or already existent, coming from shows you watched or not...), the more your style will improve

Don't give up, man, if someone requests you to draw a character you don't know enough
I know, but that's just me, I guess...
Don't throw the towel if they request you to draw a character from a show you haven't seen or you haven't drawn yet. You won't know until you try
