Great work on the shading and little details. I love that little spiderweb, and the lanterns hanging from his horns are a nice touch, as well. He looks like he'd be perfectly at home roaming the skies on Halloween night.
As for scaring your mom, I'd try a more feral look. Leave out any jewelry or chains, keep it looking untamed. Showing a little bit of gore from it's latest kill might help with that, too. Also, no feathers or fins or fur. Those little tail fins are cool, but they kind of detract from the scary. Barbed or bladed tails are always good.
