Actually wolves try to avoid killing pets and livestock until they are almost out of wild prey to hunt.  It's been proven by scientific studies.  Coyotes and feral dogs are usually the guilty parties in pet killings.

People are just so scared of wolves because wolves are an apex predator and people tend to hate anything that they think competes with them because they THINK they're the top of the food chain.

Also deer are VASTLY overpopulated in most of the USA and Canada because we all but wiped out most of their predators.  They are the #1 cause of car wrecks, they deforest large amounts of area by stripping bark off of trees and killing them, and they out compete other herbivores for food.  Wolves mostly eat deer, as do cougars.  We've pretty much wiped both off the map.
Letting the wolves be as they are would limit the spread of deer a little bit.

I'm not against shooting a wolf in self defense or if you know it's become a livestock killer (as in you have SEEN it kill something.  Because nobody these days can tell the difference between the tracks and evidence of coyotes, feral dogs, and wolves it seems).  But to shoot it just because it "might" do something or you're afraid of it is stupid.  With that logic we should wipe out all of humanity because somebody "might" pull a school shooting, sexually abuse a child, perform an act of terror, etc. etc. etc. or because one group is "scary" to another.
