Yeah, according to Urban Dictionary, the top-ranked definition is from San Francisco gang culture: there, "ripper" tends to mean max-level slut (i.e., will get "ripped" by anyone). Obviously, I don't mean THAT definition. HAHAHA
Well yes, Ripper is a positive thing. I believe it stems from Surf culture. It involves pulling off an awesome move or something. It indicates that you are bad ass. But Surf culture is sort of gone from most of Australia now. You'd have to be on the sunny coast or the gold coast.
Eh, strangely, the most fascinating area of the Outback, to me, is the Nullarbor; I'd read about it in an old 1980's National Geographic. Weird, huh?

But, the world knows us as the outback, so that's what we are. But anyway, The outback is just the vast empty that is the middle and some of the west coast of Australia.

Melbourne is the little art city in the south, it's full of friendly yuppies and hipsters. Lots of coffee shops, lots of clubs and music venues.
