It does make things look a bit flat,i agree.
I have this block over going above 640,i suppose my slower lens can make the loss of sharpness look worse...

The plan for next year is better glass, your 300 f4 looks like a good step..

Yeah, and it tends to remove detail with the noise...

Oh really? That's quite low for a D90. Is it an older version?
Yeah. The lens will accentuate anything wrong with the camera. Whenever I use my old 55-200 i'll rarely go above 800.

That 300 F4.0 is amazing. It's the best lens in it's class i've ever used. Yeah, it can hunt at times, and has no VR, but if you use anything above 1/500 and are prepared to grab the focus ring to stop the hunt then it's really fast all the time, and is stupidly sharp.

Yep.
Its about 18 months old,but it was upgraded recently when it went back for an image board problem...i havent pushed it since it came back,so it may be worth a go..
My 70-300 is nice, but needs careful use, part of which is keeping the iso down to help get sharp images(bit of a focus nazi:))

Ignoring the price difference,i am looking at the 300 f4,or maybe the 70-200 2.8...come on lotto :).

Yeah. It might be worth trying out. Mine's ok up to 2000. The stalking tiger I have is at ISO 2000
Yeah. You'll notice a BIG difference if you jump up to a prime in terms of sharpness too :)

I was going for the 70-200 at one point. It's a stunning lens, but I prefer the extra reach, and the 300mm is sharper by definition. It's one of Nikons sharpest lenses, along with the 500mm F4, the 14-24 F2.8 and the 105mm macro.

Hmm,interesting i had a look at that one and it doesnt look too noisy..i will experiment :).

The reach is a good point, but the lack of VR could be a problem too...

Good :) It's usually ok up to 1000 with no problems.

I thought that at the time.. and a VR version is in the making, but it should be over £2500...
I've found that it's not really a problem if you use your ISO a bit. I can handhold mine at 1/500 fairly easily :)

Thats a bit pricy :),1/500th isnt too bad, though its not always possible.
Chikrata's avatar
Yeah, so off the cards for the future anyway..
For a 300mm it's not bad at all. The lens's weight makes up most of the problem when trying to handhold it. Generally with telephotos you want to aim for 1/focal length, so you'd be limited to 1/300 usually anyway. VR also doesn't help for action.
I usually shoot it wide open at F4.0 with an ISO from 400-2000 depending on the light. I've only had a slow shutter speed a few times, and this is the UK!
