you can use the same trick for planes by playing with more saturated colors in the focus (foreground) and less saturated for the background, and when working with planes, 2nd plane is less staurated, while 3rd is the most. also, playing with cool-warm contrast, bringing warmer colors forward, while cooler stay in the background (and vice-versa)
