Would this tutorial be different if my character's hair colour was black? Like what base colour should I employ?

It shouldn't!~
You'd only have to approach it differently in terms of colours~
Since your character's hair is black, you wouldn't ACTUALLY use black as the base colour~

*The base would be a mildly-dark gray (in HEX code, that'd be gray:13 #212121) ([link])<<

I will do just that, drawing artwork is time consuming (not as much as calculus) but the results are satisfying.
