Yes, that is true! They were obscure in 1968 and then started an underground rock movement! They sucked, but Cream grew out of that movement!
Funny thing is that about an hour ago, listened to Velvet on the radio. They didn't sound dated at all1. I like Cream a lot, particularly their live performances, and the short lived Blind Faith. No, I don't. But I like the alternative bands a lot. I listen to everything I can experience on Spotify. I like a lot of the new music. I even like some of the new mixed rap music.
