you know a trick I sometimes use with people's names when I can't remember them, but I know i'll want to get in contact with them later?  i'll come up to them and ask about exchanging numbers, and then i'll ask "how do you spell your name again?"  if they tease you that it's something like "mary" or something let them know that these days everyone has a creative way of spelling their name and you just wanted to make sure.

ie my sister Sandra who started out as Sandy, then it was Sandi, then it was Sandie, and now it's back to Sandra again lol 

even a simple name like Sue could be Su, Sioux, Sugh, well you get the drift lol  thanks to my sis I got a lot of experience with it...hmmm...maybe that's why I don't remember names so well! lol
