It's short for Alternate Universe. Like, make your country form in the future or something so it doesn't interfere with the present or past.

I think I misused the term AU, because it means alternate universe where everything is supposed to be in a different universe of some sort. Like 2ptalia or Nyotalia. I think the correct term for what I am saying would be "Future."
