And that's the exact reason I can't stand the anime...
The anime-team just goes inventing the competition as they please creating scenarios indicating some pairings, while in the manga all this did not happen. Makes people only watching the anime think that this is the reality, while Mashima himself never intended that.
So, read the manga! it's better anyways.
