So they're aware of their own destruction, yet they do nothing to prevent it. Instead, they fret over bringing another down with them. The answer is simple: Let the other one go so you don't bring him down. Kind of selfish to keep them around when there is no intent on change in yourself. Then again this vague statement doesn't really leave much to elude to anything beyond simple recognition of a problem. Perhaps hope still exists or we're witnessing its dying flicker.
Hope never dies, it simply leaves with your permission, waiting for you to seek it again.
