Would !important be able to override that?
I've been able to actually style some of the journal editor using !important. You can muck around with the size/padding/margin/position of the text boxes and the like. For example, you can make the area where the user inputs the text for the journal at full width, or center it.

The class I mainly use is .put-art-here (which corresponds to the text entry area). I've changed width, margin, and padding on that before, but never tried with the colours.
