Hello, very sorry for the delayed reply, I've been very busy (:

To answer your question (based on my personal opinion), I found it very helpful to me when I started to learn to do QUICK sketches a lot. At start there is not much point to go for detail in your artwork, you need to learn basic things such as shapes and how to combine color. Quick drawings are helpful because they don't allow you to overthink, they support your intuition and teach you to focus on what the object looks like rather than how you usually perceive it (it's use, context, etc). When I wanted to come to a specific style in which I would typically do portraits, I sketched 10 faces on smaller papers and worked on them simultaneously.

I'm not saying spending a lot of time on one work is a bad thing but when you are starting it might get contra-productive.

PS: Some of the best pieces I've done were finished within 2 hours, sometimes being spontaneous and intuitive pays off.

Thank you for your reply!
I recently started a sketch book, filling it with various sketches, like you said, concentrating on putting down the basic idea and not working too much on the detail.
My stress towards drawing a big illustration still remains :|
