Sorry to revive an old debate, but I've been "debating" (more like arguing) with someone who is restlessly defending the new52 reboot by saying that (and I quote) "it has done a lot of good to both Superman and Wonder Woman"... :|

The discussion happens here: mahgol-dc-lover.deviantart.com… and the SMWW partisan is sithous.deviantart.com/

I was just curious about your opinion about this, since you are someone who actually understands the harm that the new52 has done to Diana.

Well in all honesty, New 52 DID do good by placing DC back in the public eye. HOWEVER Both Superman and Wonder Woman have been damaged heavily by the reboot. Superman was hit less hard but he had MoS to back him up. All Wonder woman has to sell is just her comics. Her classic incarnation is the only thing selling on her behalf.  Superman's actually selling poorly compared to the beginning of the reboot. In fact his most popular book, "Superman: Unchained" was canceled recently. Superman is becoming notorious for being poorly written and a dochebag. In fact he's becoming one of the least popular DC heroes due to the poor writing and his aggressive and bitter personality. He does have a great selling title that New 52 has done wonders for! It's called "Adventures of Superman" and it is a preNew 52 title and it is selling out each month. It's more popular than the New 52 Superman solo series. ;) Overall the New 52 put Superman back in the spotlight, shoving Batman to the side, but he has lost millions of fans and is suffering declining sales due to all the change and controversy.

Wonder Woman is a different matter entirely. In the first three months of the reboot she went from her New 52 debuted sales of 70K down to only 50K. This was a huge loss in sales. New 52 Wonder Woman does have a small cult following of GOW/Xena/Percy/Thor/Immortal fans. As you pointed out in your other comment she’s basically become a female Kratos. Wonder Woman has not had very successful sales compared to her preNew 52/Flashpoint/Odyssey story. She was selling between 40k-60k most of the time and usually had a bestselling book then. Now, Wonder Woman is barely hanging on to 32K and sales continue to decline. Many people who praise the book have never read Wonder woman until the relaunch and don’t grasp her character. They praise her ruthless behavior and her need to kill as a great move. However New 52 Wonder woman has been heavily slammed for the use of sexism and gender inequality within the New 52 series. There have also been numerous complaints about the use of violence and gore being to excessive. The costume also has damaged wonder woman’s overall sales because on average the New 52 costume does not sell. There’s also heavy confusion even amongst new 52 fans as to what of her old history has stayed. The lack of feminism in the New 52 series and the overhaul of male character forcing Diana on the backburner have also placed DC under fire. Many people have stated a variation of,

”DC has done everything to Wonder Woman but give her a penis!”

This is in many ways true. Wonder Woman has shed her compassion, warmth, promotion of peace and equality for a war-god persona. She’s ruthless and violent and many in the DC Universe feel she is a threat to society. Wonder woman is also considered by many to be the “girl-toy” of Superman as their relationship has not been written as loving, but lust and dominate. Overall wonder woman has been damaged severely by DC. Her new violent and sexual nature prevents them from making her kid-friendly. She also sells poorly in her new 52 version and most retailers have actually started to use the classic wonder woman on boxes to sell a New 52 Wonder Woman product. Comic sales on wonder woman are declining as is fan favor. The l0ong storyline, repetitive themes and all the reasons above are actually heading wonder woman down the path to a possible cancelation. Wonder woman has not sold 32K since 1980’s when the DC Universe was forced to reboot. Nightwing, recently canned for many reasons including low sales was and is selling at the sale-range as Wonder Woman. Overall, Wonder Woman has been damaged horribly by the New 52 and is at risk of becoming the “Clash” cliché that so many people are taking a dislike to. Ion her current state, Wonder Woman cannot expand beyond the realm of the New 52 and will eventually need to be reverted back to a more classical incarnation or canned. Her sales are on a rapid decline and even with a heavy male-audience (the audience DC’s new executives wanted her to have) DC will lose Wonder Woman in time if they don’t bring her classic version back.

Would they put Batman in a pink costume with no cowl? Would they take the alien origin from Superman? Would they take the orange and green off Aquaman? Would they stop Green Lantern from adventuring in space? No. But they would remove all those elements sacred to Wonder Woman. In time this new Wonder Woman will either be reverted back to her classic incarnation or due as a result of the new limited universe Brian has established. I will say this, had DC used Brian’s ideas to create a new character, the New 52 Wonder Woman as a separate entity from Wonder Woman, she’d be a success. But because so much of wonder woman was canned, lost, and changed she’s a new character and will not stand the test of time. She’s what’s “popular” here and now. Five years from now she’ll be a dated dud. It’s only a matter of time before both Superman and Wonder Woman get some reverting or they may have to stop publication. It’s the sad truth. What’s been done at DC and to its characters was the same thing that bankrupted MARVEL in the 90’s and caused it to be bought up by Disney. Funny thing is, many people involved with that fiasco now are heading DC…. Hmmm…..

What I really don't understand is why they had to make Zeus Diana's father when DC already had a daughter of Zeus: Cassandra Sandsmark. Azzarello's idea (with a few tweaks that is, mainly less violence and less spiteful Gods) could have made a great origin for Wonder Girl, with Diana as a guide and a mediator between Cassie and Hera.

You also make an interesting point about Wonder Woman not being kid-friendly anymore. Unfortunately that's a tendency that has been discreetly growing in comics since the popularization of mangas. DC and Marvel both made the error I believe to give up on the younger audience instead of trying to reconquer them. This is linked to another thing that has been missing in DC's new52 in my opinion: an actual Multiverse (that DC did promise to bring to life when they started this reboot).

Imagine the possibilities. Instead of concentrating all their efforts on a single continuity, which has become extremely confusing due to the lack of coordination between the many authors, DC could have made several active continuities, all targeted at different audiences: one for children, one for teens, one for "mature" readers (with sex and gore ) and so on...

Of course rating wouldn't have been the only difference. Origin stories, pairings, ambiance (dark, humor, supernatural, sci-fi), themes (heroism, friendship, romance, murder, conspiracy), settings (modern, futuristic, medieval) are all things that DC could have played and experimented with. I think that could have been a good idea to appeal to a wider audience. Of course that implies that DC want to sell their products to as many people as possible... :|

Well modern DC is run by people who feel Diana's too complicated of a character. Giving her a father is apparently more believe able and unique than her clay origins. They wanted to remove any ounce of feminism to make her more friendly to men and boys. The result is a more masculine Herakles in drag sort of comic. :/ they just didn't like her and went the Thor rote.
