I remember reading a book a few years back I believe was titled, 'the sociopath next door' an very informative and illuminating look into the phenomena. Last research as I've conducted, roughly 15% of the western culture is thought to have this disorder. Very rarely, very few indeed, even after their own cognizance of it will choose to control their behavior even then.
One of the best series of texts I've read (I just don't have the energy or time at this moment to google all their names for this particular arena!
)was done by an actual psychologist in England who was himself a diagnosed Narcissist anti-social, i.e., sociopath, gave the best insight we have into the working of their mind, as far as I'm concerned, in an academic format at least, explaining his innermost thoughts. He can't change or won't but the woman he married understand this and decides on her own free will to stay with him. Weird.
