I've always felt it is strange, how that can differ so much between languages. The Dutch equivalent of cunt (kut) is probably less offensive to us than "dick" is to native speakers of English. Ranks probably closer to "shit" in offensiveness.

Well of course - different cultures will have different views on words. They refer to the same body part but they don't have the same connotations.
