Taming fire is a big motivation, it seems, and likely for good reason. About how he views it, I read a book in which a child had similar views when seeing a flame from a lighter. When it was on, he imagined it as a graceful dancer, but when he burned himself on it, he viewed it as a fierce soldier. Can't remember what book it was, though.
