Thanks Vask/sinsation. Well after roberts comments I went back and repositioned the HDRI and realised I had cocked up with that. Then I redid the nodes and boy did I have things wrong with that too. Anyways I am rerendering and what a difference a day makes.
Indeed it does. Even the smallest bit of knowledge has the power to transform an entire image depending how it's used. 
I am not saying the Blender nodes system is easy, far from it but once you understand a few rules things fall in to place.
Between Poser, DS, Blender, and Filter Forge, you'd think I'd have nodes down by now. >.<
