i have tried... i get so 'tight'... and that shows... it looks forced...

what i need to do is take a drawing class... again... (i've had exactly one)... that structure and environment made it easier for me last time...

I had so much fun once, that I go completely carried away and actually tore a hole in the canvas. And that pissed me off. What a waste. Oh well :)

(laugh)... now that sounds like fun!...

It was. I was really into it, as it was a piece pertaining to Aushcwitz, and I rarely do pre concieved art, and it was going quite nicely until the butter knife I was using to scrape ink off the canvas (mark making of a sort) partially went through because the canvas was too wet.

It made me a little emotional as whilst I am not a perfectionist, I do like to present work in a professional manner, and whilst the tear is only minor (a gauge more like) it now resides on my wall - I can't show it without having some weird anxiety attached to it.

(grin)... i know that feeling... the smallest imperfection keeps things in boxes at my house... i've had friends say 'you can barely see it' and 'if you don't want, then give it to me'... but they stay in boxes...

a piece about aushcwitz?... hhhhmmm... that could be hard... but, if it worked out, really impressive... that is a powerful (and difficult) subject... did you ever paint another?...

No, I didn't actually. I strongly believe in never trying to achieve something more than once.
If it didn't work out the first time, then I figure you should try and attempt something else.
Very simplistic attitude, I know, but that's how it is for me.

That and the fact that the piece itself seemed very obvious to me afterwards, and a little basic in concept.
I don't like obvious.

To quote a great band in Australia called The Dirty Three - Obvious is obvious, unless of course it isn't.

when working with conceptual art, obvious can be a little... hhhhmmm... pedantic... it is a problem i often have... how to be more discreet (if that is the right word) when managing a concept...

i think i know what you mean... it is like, say, music... it is one thing for the sex pistols to snarl, cuss and play their instruments poorly... there was a charm in it... an energy born of the fact they were among the first... it is different for someone to try and do the same thing now... the gesture has lost its meaning... and interest...

Fair call, that.

I don't believe there is a constant need to be original to be relevant, but you do need to be consistent, palatable (at least in some shape or form), and have a concept that has the basic ability to generate interest from a fundamental level. Obviousness achieves all of those things, so to combat obviousness taking over, you need to simply attack the idea from a different angle. An angle that has personal value to you as the artist, and an angle that can be relatable to the viewer.

Damn, I feel like a philosopher!!
