Yeah I don´t like gnome shell for a lot of reasons either.If you have a similar mindset as I then maybe you could give cinnamon a try!It has the same extensibility as gnome shell in form of applets desklets and extensions but the DE has a classical and proven approach!Or you could always use KDE
