This is as beautiful and tender as it is heart breaking. As a cat owner myself (I've currently got two), I'm dreading the day when this will inevitably happen. All that matters is that your cat was loved (and loved you in return) - that, to me, is what life is all about. 
Please don't feel guilty or blame yourself for not being there more often - cats are very forgiving and you have no reason to feel bad or sorry; you did your best.
