I can't really comment on the economic model SAI have chosen to fund their software development. I can say however that software should be available to everybody without restriction and that developers should be paid for the act of programming, not afterwards. And in this regard, SAI like every proprietary software is broken.

The question is, do we fix SAI by convincing the company to open source, or do we compete and make something better than SAI?

I know. So far that is one problem especially with Microsoft computer's security. Lots of Malware and anti virus programs I have seen and used are great, just they are very expensive to even want to touch, yet that allows for Windows Security to be weaken, unless people are willing to give up their personal use of a computer to modify the current security(firewall) to keep themselves safe, which is sad.

That is a really good question. I'd say we should fix and improve SAI. If we fix instead of compete, then we aren't creating healthy competition, but creating a war between programs, which is pain to see and hear of. Even that friend who is always going on about "Because Linux does everything illegally" is understandable for how his father fixes Windows computers for a living, and he doesn't want his dad to lose that, but it has caused my friend to get defensive about 'other' choices and such. Even dealing with someone on dA whose whole gallery is nothing but Windows Pictures, has shown that he will quickly threaten to have anyone banned for talking positive of computers not related to Windows. Like he has twice to me and my friend for having "Linux Support" on our dA signatures.

Woops, I am sorry for going off topic onto a bad rant.
