Thank you very much Nicole ! I use "soft" pencil (8B or 9B) and "colored" background and darkest parts of the image several times (paper must be of good quality), until I get maximum black. Of course, it takes time and a little patience. 
aha! Thanks so much, I will try using darker pencils - I only use grades till 6B, and decent but not excellent paper.
