I sort of interpreted the boy differently, though. I saw it as a guy who recognizes her insecurity and notices her (while everyone else is clueless as to her suffering). When he "reached for her heart", I saw it as him trying to coax her 'out of her shell'. And when he smiled at his bleeding fingers, I took it as... even though he has been hurt trying to get to her, he is determined to help her out no matter what it takes.
Forgive me. I'm sorry that that was not what you had intended, but I thought I'd share what I'd gotten from it.
I got hope that maybe someone would notice me, and would try that hard to get me 'out of my shell'.
