A clique may have developed around #devart, but, personally, I don't think that ever should have been the case. Even if there are cliques within the room, which is natural, it is not really up to those people to decide who "deserves" to be in the room. At least not when the criteria is unreasonable.

As you point out, the regular's definition of "not an idiot" is fairly strong, and perhaps too strong. Whether people get into your "club" or not should hold no bearing on whether they are welcome in the channel or not. Quite often, people who are simply new to the chats and don't quite "get it" are regarded is idiots, and treated pretty harshly. They're not necessarily doing anything too stupid, yet sometimes they get chased out of the room. Even those who come in and post a thumb, or similar, often simply do not realise it is against the rules at first.

Have your clique, whatever. But I don't see why it should be so difficult to tolerate those who are new, or just happen to like something that most regulars do not.

That said, people do seem more tolerant of newer chatters recently. Which is nice.

I don't disagree with you, actually.

I think cliques and clubs or whatever is fine, but you're right in that those groups shouldn't shoo away any new person ever.  Often that just leads overreaction, on both sides, and nothing positive comes from it.  I've been consciously trying to have more patience, although there are sometimes people who know exactly what they're doing and only doing it for attention and to raise a fuss.  I'm pretty impatient for those people.
