Not a problem, thank YOU for the feedback!  The sharpening
gradient sounds like an amazing tool - so much better than
hand-jamming it like this girl, haha.

Well there techincally isn't a function called a "sharpening gradient".  In Gimp/Photoshop you would duplicate the working layer, perform sharpening, apply a layer mask, and then apply a gradient.  That would make the sharpening full strength in one area of the photo and fade out toward another end.

Ah, gotcha.  I never thought about using it that way. 
I just used varying strengths on the pen whenever I used masks.
