Ah, you make me want to revisit Trier 
You have been in Trier? I was quite surprised how cool it was, the museum of the cathedral and the archaeological museums where quite interesting and I also liked the abbey of St. Mathias - where did you go in the city - I probably missed a lot of sites...
I must admit it was some time ago. I do remember the general medieval look and the black tower. And there was a nice toy museum, if I remember correctly.
