How were you able to use both gnome-shell and pantheon-shell?
It's Gnome 3.11.9 as opposed to gnome-shell. Gnome is the general framework whereas gnome shell is the interface. This is based on Gnome instead of say Unity and uses the elementary pantheon interface on top of that framework.
