I still haven't found how to make them from scratch. I tried yesterday but only got a pale image.

It's a very complex OCA. There is a lot to get your head round. I have just made a new one with my own Julia, I don't think many of the formulas are that compatible. Julias are best since they are orbit trap friendly 
I have done the same but still haven't got it right. I also think that only Julias which support Orbit Traps and only certain of the traps are compatible.
