Out of the two which would you recommend getting?

And that's cool to hear you are working on a route with a friend. Can't wait to see it! ;p
I've been plotting and fiddling about with routes and route ideas even though I can only use TRS06 at present.
One is a freelance 30" gauge line somewhere in the southwest, probably Nevada. The other is something more "whimisical" in nature. Are you familiar with Carl Fallberg's cartoon book "Fiddletown & Copperopolis"? It was a neat little book about a fictional 3ft gauge line in Californian. (Though the places Fittletwon and Copperopolis actually exist) Fallberg was a Disney artist and his cartoons reflect that. I decided to build a route based around the cartoon(s). Lots of railroad puns included. Like "Tehatchet Loop"! :iconfoxhahaplz:

I started building the route in Copperopolis and have gotten as far as Tehatchet Loop, which is roughly about 1/4 to 1/3 of the line. I'm trying to keep the route as condensed as possible, but still have the feeling of mileage and distance. Fortunately all the curves help with that. Fallberg was kind enough to include a system map in his book.

This is my current project, though when I can upgrade to a better TRS edition I'd like to transfer things over. It'll be a fun route, just need to get the mainline done, terriform landscape, add industries, other structures, ect... and then it'll be done... I hope. ^^;

Heh. I'd probably recommend TS12 simply because I don't know what I'd do without three routes to run:
-Rollins Pass NG(Not too many industries but man is it fun! And the route is built to exceptional standards)
-Foxshire Light Railway(One of :iconredtailfox:'s creations, it started as a testing route but is by far the best of his 4x8 series. It feels like a real line, and he has plans to expand it to include a slate quarry and a dock, which will make it even more fun)
-Freeport & Waterford Mills(Never actually completed but a beta went out at Christmas, the completed route will be quite epic indeed considering the caliber of the beta)
And the Durango & Silverton looks nice; however I haven't run it yet due to having ~30 missing dependencies.
Not to mention projects underway:
-Colusa & Lake Railway(A California Narrow Gauge line in its entirety, most of it is straight but the scenery up near Sites is to die for! Beta should be quite near)
-Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways(This thing is a huge, extended project. I do not know when it will be complete but screenshots look absolutely stunning)
-Donner Pass(modern day, but I heard rumors at some point that Jango has a historical one planned if he can find enough data)
-White Pass & Yukon(just started so this one may be a couple years in the making but it'll certainly be epic)

The Foxshire light railway is indeed to be expanded to include slate quarry and port but that will take some time as I will be using my housemate's awesome monster of a computer to make the game work better for me.
