Actually both versions are infested with filler, slightly unnecessary comedy and weird moral lessons in my opinion, especially in the later seasons. This is probably the reason why I read the manga instead, because the anime was so different that it was horrifying. Although the English version is a whole new world of weird...

And don't forget Battles that always are merely just a Reused Stock Footage Attack Sequence and then *POOF* the bad guy disappears (or changes back to normal if it was a brainwashed person).

My biggest problem with Sailor Moon. IT IS NEVER ACTION PACKED, NO BIG AWESOME BOSS BATTLES, JUST STOCK FOOTAGE AND THEN SHE WINS!

There are some cool boss battles near the end (and in the Movies) though. However in the later seasons the fight scenes are shorter, Sailor Moon (and Chibi Moon) just act scared and don't actually do anything but do their fancy attacks and whatnot

That's the problem with the majority of Magical Girl shows. Not just Sailor Moon, but also ones like Tokyo Mew Mew, Wedding Peach, Precure, and even Utena are just infested with lousy Reused Stock Footage Attack Sequences and that's it.

Stock Footage is the bane of Magical Girls and why I dislike the majority of them.

So? Most shows have stock footage. Sentai, mecha, etc. What does matter is a good story, animation and how you use said stock footage. Even the best shows have stock
Hexidextrous's avatar
Really? Because all of my favorite anime series actually have big action packed boss battles without Stock Footage, and actually animate all the cool moves and parkour dodges and explosions all the way, and use loads of cool effects, sometimes almost feeling like something out of a super cool video game too! And they are better shows because of it too!

Oh, and the thing about Usagi and Chibiusa chickening out is even worse, because the Theme Song says "Never Running from Evil," when that's EXACTLY what they do! That's false advertising right there!

Well, sometimes... Precure has all these stock and yet this one episode of Go Princess had one of the coolest fight scenes I've ever seen. Wasn't expecting it from a magical girl show

New comment on an old post, but screw it. Sentai, Precure and 90s Sailor Moon are mostly aimed at kids and adults (Andt they certainly are not afraid of being edgy if 90s' Liveman and Jetman are anything to go by), but they have more limited budget when it comes to producing their shows (Making animation or adding special effects to a live action show don't come cheap you know, especially if the shows come out weekly and they have 40-or-more episodes), so they get around those budget problems with stock footage (Thought why he doesn't attack Digimon despite that show having transformation stock footage too is beyond me)

Hexi not liking those shows can be traced back to the fact that he mostly grew up with adult-oriented anime (That only have 13-or-so episodes and have more budget put to them) and video games that don't have these issues, so there's some bias in his statements.

I disagree. The Stock Footage ruins it, and how stupid the bad guys look (they always look more like escaped circus freaks or understudy rejects for Power Rangers Villains), and such. It's also too Conveyor Product-y. Precure sucks!

The only Magical Girl show I've seen with actually uber hyper mega epic Boss Battles is Maho Shoujo Madoka Magica.
What truly sets Madoka Magica apart from other Magical Girls is that it's the only one with absolutely zero Stock Footage! And the Bosses are like something out of Bayonetta, Xenoblade, Final Fantasy, Chaos Legion, Metal Gear Rising, Phantasy Star, or some other uber mega awesome video game like that! Made even more with how the Witch Barriers feel like a stage in such video games with all the traps and enemies and hazards they have to jump and bash and dodge their way through to make it to the Boss Chamber where the Witch awaits. It needs to be more Video Game-like, and that's what also makes it better (than and no Stock Footage ruining it).

Also it's different because the Witches aren't being personally sent out by some Rita Repulsa knockoff who wants to steal their Magical Trinkets and then take over the world or something like that. And usually sends out one that's themed for whatever situation they're in for that particular episode.
-Like Queen Beryl always does
-Or like Quiche and Deep Blue always do in Tokyo Mew Mew
-Or like Reine Devila always does in Wedding Peach
-Or like Joker always does in Precure
-Or like Hawk Moth always does in Miraculous Ladybug
-Or like Ludo always does in Star Vs The Forces Of Evil
-And all other Magical Girls
The Witches are acting on their own behalf, not because some Rita Repulsa-esque head honcho personally sent them after the girls in that sort of manner, like all other Magical Girls have. That's what really makes it different!

That's why I like Madoka Magica more than any other Magical Girl show. That and the CUTENESS! They are all so poofy and floofy and cuddly and snuggly! No other Magical Girls I've seen are as poofy and cuddly as they are. MORE CUTENESS AND FLUFFINESS AND MOE'.

Unless you count Strike Witches and Black Rock Shooter, but I don't know if those necessarily count as Magical Girl shows or not (some people I've met say they aren't).

Still, nothing beats the action and cuteness of Sonic! Sonic The Hedgehog will always be the best! (and yes I know Sonic isn't a Magical Girl show, but it's better still), and also Sonic doesn't use any Stock Footage either!
