I for one consider thanking for faves/watches as spam. Many people will go as far as shamelessly posting "Thank you for faving my [deviation link]!" or building up some plz mosaics with a logo and whatnot. That's just self-promotion.

A better practice (which I follow) would be to always leave a comment along with watching or faving, because this way the person won't have to spam your inbox with a generic message to thank you, but rather do it on their own page, collecting appreciation about her work in a single page: you can even start a conversation by saying stuff about the work and why you faved it.

Some people ignore my comment and still go spamming my front page with a thank you. I then proceed to deleting it and removing the watch/fave.

I sometimes thanks people for faving/watching my work and I honestly didn't know it was spam.
Never built up a mosaic but I've did a reference with my artwork. Just so it's easier to find it, not as a self-promotion stuff.

Yeah, this thing goes both ways.

Sometimes people are really grateful, sometimes they are just copying the thanking process because others do it and they infer it is the polite thing to do.

By leaving a comment on a person's deviation, though, I avoid the need for the person to "spam" me (be it intentional or out of politeness), so he can still thank me if he finds it necessary. Since most people fave-and-run, such thing is not possible, and they are kind of asking to be thanked on the front page. :P

I understand now.
Hahaha, I'm a sort of Fave & Run... let's say uhm... 80% of the time.
