The movies in hindsight have it easier off in general; Hiccup gets long-lasting respect and a cool dragons, Snotlout isn't a jealous traitor, Stoick is actually a smart chief, and movie Toothless exists.

Exactly. Book Hiccup's life kinda sucks. He has his two friends, SOMETIMES his persnickety dragons, and everyone else is either disappointed, or wants to kill him most of the time.

And it just keeps getting worse, all because Hiccup got bad karma from framing the Hairy Scary Librarian for the stolen Stealth Dragon and because he needs to be a hero. It is amazing how he's adapted, but I imagine he believes in the Misery Builds Character trope. I believe he suffers PTSD as a chief.
