I'd give up framebuffer if I were you, it makes the console a lot slower 
Well, I can't stand those bug letters... And I've got computer fast enough to not see the difference at 1024x768
The difference is huge if you run something that outputs a lot of stuff really fast. Like a package building or so 
Try Terminus font, it can be used even without framebuffer and looks a lot better then the standard character set
