I'm confused. A few journals ago you posted how you'd discourage people from getting into things like the Gaming Industry because of the terrible backlash they could receive. Now you're openly asking people to start protesting with journals and videos and the like. Isn't that sending people into the direct line of abuse that people like Zoe and Anita have been dealing with, which you said you personally wouldn't recommend people getting involved in?
Yeah that's a problem. On the one hand, I don't wish anyone to go through the shit many of those people have. On the other hand, I also know that it won't get better if there aren't people who can brave the storm and clean up the mess. It's quite a double edged sword.
That's the problem with a lot of things lately, it seems. The people who want to help are a lot of times too afraid to because they see the horrible things the people who aren't even doing anything wrong have to deal with. And if they speak up, who is to say that the same or worse won't be done to them? It's easier to stop fighting than to deal with the backlash for a lot of people. And I really wish that fear didn't effect so many people. ):
That was about getting into the industry as creators. This is about standing up for something you believe in as a gamer. Yes, either way, you're putting yourself in the line of fire, but if you want to protect something you care for, you have to fight for it.
They aren't entirely exclusive, though. If you are doing something to get bullied and have to stop it, vs seeing someone being bullied and trying to help and in return getting bullied yourself. Then you end up in the place of the original. And, in this case of extreme bullying, with your information being made public and the death threats involved, it would take a very strong person to stand up to it. Not everyone can be that strong, even if they want to be.
It's a reaction to two different situations. The Phil Fish incident makes it very apparent that staying out of the industry entirely is the best thing to do for minimal conflict and a stress-free life. However, it is easy to understand that one may get annoyed at the type of people who seemingly have the time and energy to spare to bitch at a small online personality about a single journal they wrote because they are unhappy about being generalised, rather than dealing with the source of the generalisation. If these people have such time and money to spare and are displeased, their time and energy would be better spent pursuing a perception of gamers that meets with their approval. He isn't telling anyone that they have to/should do anything, it is simply an expression of the most obvious course of action given a specified situation. Clearer? Just because he is slightly better known than Average DeviantArtist, doesn't mean he should be held to higher standards than everyone else and grilled on every single inconsistency in his journals. Everyone has a "fuck this shit" moment in which they lose faith in humanity and wanted to shut the door on them. Everyone has wished the human race would be a little bit better than they really are. Ultimately, I think TomPreston would probably prefer we follow this journal's example, rather than the other as he has come across to me to be the idealist of the latter wish. But that's just my observations. It takes a tremendous amount of courage to continuously speak to so many strangers in such an honest and passionate manner and, though I may not always agree with him, I always admire him for CARING enough to want others to care too. Because we should care more than we do, it's just safer and easier not to. And, in summary, that is why both of his journals can co-exist without contradicting themselves. (I understand that you may not have meant any cynicism or spite in your comment, but it is hard to tell via the internet and, besides, I felt this needed to be said somewhere.)
To be fair about Phil Fish: this guy goes out of his way to be as antagonistic as possible. He probably wouldn't have gotten as much flak if he wasn't acting like a jackass towards his fans, PC gamers, youtubers and even his own colleagues.
No I didn't mean any spite or anything. I just wanted a little more clarification from him on how he felt about the two situations. I understood his line of thinking, I just wanted to know if he was being consistent and which he wanted more.
