That isn't the case. It is more like how the armour is set. Like, this halfplate may get one if the owner find it more useful to protect the head... :3

Well, that is reality of the dark ages - most nations had no actual uniformed army. Actually, uniforms became common (again after Rome) in the early 16th Century, or more likely at the time when a state changed to actual standing army.
Feudal lords had either paid the same blacksmiths to produce vast amounts of the same/similar styles or had made the people pay their own.

I really need to brush up on my history, otherwise there'll be stuff like the cotton gin sittin' around in places they have no right to be.
