You as well? I love black and white-I take much longer doing the colored portions c:

Yeah I find the greyscale more appealing to look at and I always paint in it first before moving to colour, but I have studied colour theory and I know how to use it in conjunction with the values. I find doing the greyscale takes much longer, especially considering how detailed and rendered I want it, but it means that I've done most of the work I only have to add the colour on top and then it's done!

I see! Unfortunately in my Color Theory course we didn't learn to overlay the colors. I've seen it used in amazing ways, though, so am trying to figure out the best method on my own.  I have noticed a flattening aspect with certain tones and hues that I haven't quiet solved yet, haha!

Ahh you see that's where most people go wrong. You're not supposed to use overlays as a base for your colour. Providing you've set the values up correctly and matching them to their corresponding colours, then you only need to use a multiply layer. Except a lot of people make the mistake in that they change the value slider whilst applying colour but you're meant to have the value slider on 100 or pure white, and only change the saturation. This will give you the pure colour that represents your value and then you can use overlays ontop of that for strength of saturation and soft lights for subtle changes between them. Hope this helps!

Really! That's actually very good to know! I'm completely self-taught with digital painting, so every little discovery is a huge deal. Thank you for the advice! I'll have to try this out soon c:

Yeah like I've been greyscale painting for a couple years now and until I learnt that recently in my classes I was messing up all the numerous hours I spent on perfecting those values! But I was painting an environment one day and just started to add colour and my teacher came over and told me, "why do you have the values slider not at 100?" And It's just helped me so much since then it was a great discovery xD

So yeah, good luck with your paintings!
