Choosing something good over something crappy can be a hard choice these days. x.x
Hopefully things are different, at one point DA had issues with people getting viruses from the ads they had, possibly a script error along as an issue with the type of browser being used. But this was like 5-6 years ago and luckily I run ad blockers and script prompts... bloody hell some of the stuff that DA tries to get off a persons computer from personal to the types of sites you visit can be annoying as heck.

Just for shits and giggles, I decided I'd see how many elements uBlock Origin typically blocks on some sites' homepages:
DA (Today section): 8
ArtStation: 2
Flickr: From 9 to the hundreds as you keep scrolling down. I wish I was lying about that one.
Also, it seems like the traffic in and out of DA has observed quite the increase by the end of 2016.

Not to surprised by traffic on DA, they have a fair amount of postings on stuff from Facebook and ect to draw more traffic in.
